History of Carefree Acres

Founded in 1966, Carefree Acres was one of the many bungalow colonies located in the Swan Lake area of Sullivan County, upstate New York, during the heyday of the Catskills "Resort Era."

By the 1940s–1960s, Sullivan County was home to hundreds of resorts, hotels, and bungalow colonies that catered primarily to New York City families seeking summer escapes. Swan Lake alone contained dozens of hotels and approximately 42 bungalow colonies, making it one of the busiest resort communities in the region.

After the resort era, many bungalow colonies transitioned from seasonal rentals into shareholder-owned communities, which is exactly how Carefree Acres evolved into the community it is today.

1800s

Stevensville takes shape around the Stevens family tannery.

1895

The Swan Family acquires much of the surrounding lake land.

1927

The community is officially renamed Swan Lake.

1940s–1960s

Sullivan County becomes one of the busiest resort and bungalow destinations in the Catskills.

1966

Carefree Acres is founded during the bungalow colony era on Swan Lake.

1969

Woodstock, the most famous music festival of its era, takes place nearby at Bethel Woods, bringing music, counterculture, and free-spirited energy to Sullivan County.

Current

Carefree Bungalows is still situated and thriving, welcoming new families while the local community continues to unite around lake life. Many concert goers still flock to Bethel Woods for musical concerts and cultural events.
